This Ain’t Home Depot

posted in General |

I was doing my traditional MMWAP. I’d read through all my usual links, then moved on to StrayChaser, who I read approximately three times weekly. Compelling but depressing. I envy her focus, gumption and energy, but I don’t envy her pain. Anyway, I had read about some feral cats that were fixed with “POPPA” funds. So I went and looked up POPPA in google, and found them. Hurray for google! This lead me to something I found fascinatin’.

POPPA also runs something called Recycled Gardens. This is like the ReBuilding Center, but for your garden; they have plants and landscape materials. So, now I have another field trip to take the kids on; and besides, they might have a dark purple lilac bush for my wife :)

Honestly, I’ve been to the ReBuilding center a few times. Only once have I actually purchased stuff there; I wanted some conduit stuff for the basement wall, so I could run some more electricity down there. I described to someone what I was looking for, and he replied “hey man, this isn’t Home Depot™,” I found what I needed about twenty minutes later.

Let me know if you go - I know exactly where it is and could always meet you there.

Heh, doesn’t sound too different from any of my recent experiences at the Despot. Their service suck-diddly-ucks. Apparently Habitat for Humanity runs a recycled building materials store in Portland now, might be worth checking out.

    Woah, stacy, good tip!

Honestly, the service at the rebuilding center isn’t a whole lot worse than the service at home despot.

I am depressing? I am sorry. Very very sorry. Hey, um, trying to recall the lyrics to some song but not recalling. Ah well. I struggle but so far, I’m still alive. That is not that depressing, to be still breathing. Recycled Gardens is very cool indeed. It is run by hard working volunteers, namely Keni Cyr Rumble. Here is to Keni!!!! Here is to hard working unpaid volunteers everywhere trying to make difference. Here is to single parents, trying to raise their kids right. Hey, good for you, frenzied daddy. Do you need a kitten by chance? He is sweet and fixed.

You, yourself, are not depressing. No. Your postsf are compelling. You are inspiring. But reading about animals that are treated like that, that’s depressing. I’m glad someone like you is taking care of them. Your roster, like the Memorial Day roster of the dead veterans, telling us who has been found and euthanized due to FLV or other ills, is sad. People are jackasses.

Me, a kitten? No, cute as they are; we have five cats (and two dogs) at the moment. All fixed. Mostly shots, no FLV. The border collie thinks he’s keeping them in line. Two of the cats are wild-rescues, we pulled Malkin out of a dumpster in Eugene, and Alice came from Pendleton (he was a stray that Mrs B’s grandmother fed, then she passed away, and the stray and all her kids were at the funeral). One came from the Humane Society in Eugene, and two were adopted from litters here in P-town.

You’re not depressing. I wish, in some ways, I could be more like you. But I don’t have the strength of character that would require.

And, I don’t know if you meant “single parents” to apply to me; I’m happily married, and Mrs B is awesome.
